Public Statement
REGARDING THE POSTS OF EU HEADS ON "X"
ABOUT THE MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF SERBIA

Forum for Security and Democracy is deeply concerned and taken aback by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission by the fact that they informed the Serbian and EU public about their meeting with the President of Serbia only through rather brief and conventional posts on "X".
FSD underscores how disproportionate this address is and how short it falls of the expectations of the public of a country that is an official candidate for EU membership, which they preside over, and which is in a state of turmoil that is evident in the confrontation of the government with the mass student and citizen protests going on for the past four months.
FSD would be very concerned indeed if what lies behind last nights' posts of the heads of the European Commission and the European Council can be perceived as inertness of the administration in Brussels or, worse, a lack of interest or misconception concerning the current social and political events in Serbia.
FSD warns that such an erroneous "reading of the situation", especially by the President of the EC, would not only be detrimental to the achievement of the EU's own goals, but also even more damaging to the very social actors in Serbia's political scene who need EU support today more than ever, students above all others, as well as to free media and the representatives of the civil society in the country.
FSD last but not least warns that such statements open the gates for the further proliferation and strengthening of Russian influence in Serbia, which the student protests have so far successfully resisted, and further marginalization of pro-European political movements and civil society organizations that are left in the country.
